In today's world, a lot of produce we buy is sprayed with pesticides or can pick up bacteria and fungi from being touched by pickers and other people in the store. Even if you grow your own food in your garden, it can still be contaminated by outside factors like animals and mother nature.
Thoroughly cleaning your fruits and veggies before eating not only keeps your family safe by taking off the waxy dirt and grime, but it will actually prevent early rot and mold as well. This will end up maximizing the shelf life of your food and possibly save you hundreds in the long run.
So what are our options?
1. Water
Simply washing the fruit off in water takes care of a lot of bacteria and pesticides, however, if using water it's very important that the water be as close to the temperature of the food as possible.
A lot of people make the mistake of bringing produce home and washing it with cold water, which is actually one of the worst things you can do! Drastic changes in temperature can cause produce to pull in the water surrounding it which will actually end up drawing the fungus and bacteria into your food, giving you the opposite of the desired effect. Try to match, as closely as possible, the core temperature of the food. For example, if you picked something from the garden, and it is 85 degrees outside, try to match the 85 degrees. Obviously you cant get the temperature exact, but it is still a good rule of thumb to try to get fairly close.

Although these are a good option in general to keep your fruits and veggies clean, the cost alone voids most of their benefits. Many of them either won't perform much better than water, or the cost alone means it will be more economical to just buy new fruit when it goes bad. One cleaner that we have found to be worth considering is the Honest Company Fruit and Veggie Cleaner. Although you are still paying $7 + S/H every month or two just to keep your fruit around an extra couple days, it is extremely family safe and we have had good history with The Honest Company products in the past.
3. Vinegar
By far, our favorite choice is one that may or may not surprise you. Vinegar, the ultimate natural household cleaner, does produce too! The most powerful solution would be to mix 1 part vinegar, 3 parts water. However, we find that adding 1 cups vinegar to about a half a sink (standard size kitchen sink) full of water will give you the increased cleaning effect, without breaking the bank.
-Clean your sink before filling with water.
-Fill sink 1/2 to 3/4 full of water at similar temperature to the food.
-Add 1 cup vinegar to water and stir till well diluted.
-Soak fruit for 7-10 minutes and dry off with clean towel.
There you go! Now you have some clean, longer-lasting fruits and veggies!
